Dog of the Month:  Hello, my name is Dixie Lou and I am a five year old Golden Retriever and weigh 70 lbs.  My nickname is Two Ball Dancing Brows.  I love all dogs and all people.  And as my breed dictates, I believe the whole world is one great big party and I am the guest of honor!  When I was just a pup my Mom and Dad (Lori and Jody Skelton) would take me to the dog parks in Tallahassee on weekend college visits.  Then my Dad became the new Parks and Recreation Director and Wah La!!.....We have dog parks!!!  I visit all three dog parks and I will retrieve tennis balls forever, even with a pound of dirt on my face, in my eyes, down my throat, etc.  I also dive.  So if you see a Golden with its head under water for up to 10 seconds at the Bayview Dog Beach, its probably me diving for a rock on the bottom.  See you at the dog parks and you can throw something for me to retrieve!

Volunteers and Dogs that give so much to the Community: Let's not forget people and their guardians that give so much to our community.  This month we feature Linda Reinhardt and Cosmost.  Many of you know them as the lady with the big black Great Dane, however do you know about all the things they do for our community?  First, are you aware that Cosmost is certified to visit nursing homes and visits them on a regular basis bringing smiles to many people that are confined.  Second, are you aware that Cosmost is certified to work with the R.E.A.D. program, helping children read better. Third, have you noticed how clean Summit Dog Park is? Thanks to Linda, its been that way.  In addition to all of the above Linda also teaches school and raises a family. What a pleasure it is to have her on the Pensacola Dog Owners Board of Directors.

Community Outreach Program Schedule:  The next Associations monthly Community Outreach program is scheduled for August 8th, 7:00 P.M., at Bayview Senior Center.  We have a very exciting speaker that will talk about "The Southeast Guide Dogs Puppy Program".  Don't miss it as this will be another exciting program on ways that we can help our community. Our speaker Susan Brewster is the area coordinator for the Southeastern Guide Dogs, is also a K9 Obedience Instructor and a volunteer with the Escambia County 4-H Center for Independent Living. Everyone is invited, don't miss this great event.  It's free and lasts about an hour. Questions call 432-8323

A howling good time at Bark in the Park: Bring your dog, kids and anyone else you know to Pelican Park at UWF on Monday, August 14th, 6:30 P.M. for a great night of Baseball and fun. All dogs are free and if you bring a donation of pet food, treats, toys, collars or blankets you and your pet will be entered to win exciting prizes. Watch a great baseball game, enjoy your family and pet at this great event.   All donations benefit the Pensacola Humane Society.

Pet Shelters for Hurricane Evacuees:   The project is now in the hands of the Escambia County Commissioners.  Commissioner Tom Benjanin's office notified the Association that the issue will be addressed August 10th at the County Commissions committee meeting.  Please keep the letters to the County Commissioners going and if you can try and attend the meeting August 10th, 3:30 pm, in the Courthouse located at Government and Palafox.

Jewels of PensacolaOur City dog parks are one of the jewels of Pensacola.  Visit our dog parks often. Remember, when you leave, leave only paw prints in them.  If you happen to see someone overlook picking up after their dog, point it out to them or offer them a bag.  It takes an effort by everyone to keep our parks clean.  Remember, responsible dog owners always carry a bag and pick up after their dog.

Gulf Breeze: The Gulf Breeze City council approved the Gulf Breeze Dog Park at their July 12th meeting.  The Park will be located near Shoreline Park Boat Launch and the clearing for the dog park will begin August 12th.  The next Gulf Breeze  Dog Park steering committee meeting will take place Tuesday, August 1st at 7:00 P.M., at Shoreline Recreational Center. Please come to the meeting and share your ideas and suggestions.

Great Member News: Central Bark Bakery, located at 403 S. Palafox Place just opened its new dog spa that features Hydrosurge bathing that is a therapeutic bath for dogs. Hours are 10:00 A.M. - 8:00 P.M. On August 1, 2006 the Bakery will begin sponsoring a downtown walking club that is open to all dog lovers. The walkathon will give you and your dog the opportunity to socialize and exercise with many others, plus you can enjoy a walk thru beautiful downtown Pensacola.  Walks will be approximately 1 1/2 miles and start at 6:30 P.M. at Central Bark Bakery where you will be provided with a map of the route.  Questions, call 433-2675.  Support PDOA members.

Brick Program: Stop by Bayview Park and see the dog memorial bricks that have been laid.  A wonderful memorial to your dog and a beginning to a lasting improvement to the walkway. Look for your brick on this dog walk of fame.  Also notice the new bulletin board and benches outside the dog park. A special thanks to the Pensacola Parks Department for their support with these projects. Many of you have asked about our starting another brick program, we expect to, however, no date has been set.

Five Flags Dog Training Classes:   Five Flags has finally (after about 4 years) found a place to routinely offer dog obedience classes.  Classes will be offered every Wednesday at the Escambia County Equestrian Center.   It depends on the number of dogs registered but the plan is to offer a puppy class at about 6:30 P.M.  and a basic class at 7:30 P.M..   Call 438-6141 for more information.

Woof, Woof: At last work has begun on the Bayview Park pier.  What a wonderful improvement this will be to the park.  Two years in the making the new pier will have lights, benches and boat docks.  The Pensacola Parks Department has done a lot of work to make this possible.  Next time you see someone from the parks department, give them a thanks for all the hard work.
